If you look back through time, every species seems to go extinct eventually. What makes us so different? Are we intelligent enough to outwit nature and survive despite it, or will our intelligence ultimately be the cause of our downfall. If in the future the human race ceases to exist, then everything we've accomplished will be forgotten. Is everything we do in vain? What is the point in science and discovery, in progress if it all comes to nothing in the end? No legacy, no reason to exist in the first place. Perhaps the reason we do all this is because if we don't then we really are doomed, and understanding the universe is our best chance for surviving in it. So the true nature of science and scientists like us is to find hope for the future, to give life a meaning, to build a legacy worth surviving.. If it's possible for mankind to live forever, then we will find a way because if we don't then our existance would have been meaningless.
